Wind Beneath Your Wings

GullHow Does Coaching Work?

In an introductory session or sessions, you and your coach determine what you want to accomplish with coaching support. This dictates, to some extent, how often you and your coach will meet and how long the coaching may last.

For example, if you want to work toward being promoted at your evaluation in six months, then we might schedule weekly or every other week sessions to focus on actions that will assure your promotion. The coaching time frame would be six months.

Or let's say that you want to change a bad habit and install a more positive one in its place. We would probably schedule weekly sessions to focus on replacing the bad habit with the newly designed one. Sometimes even more frequent mini sessions might be the right support system for building a new habit. The coaching time frame would be somewhere between three to six months.

I hope you can see from these examples that coaching offers the flexibility to support you in the most optimal way that you and your coach can identify.

Generally, coaching is done in 15, 30, or 45 minute sessions on a regular basis (weekly, bi-weekly, etc.). We coaches have learned that most goals take at least three months of working together, so I request that you make a minimum 3-month commitment to begin.

While coaching can be done in person, that limits your choice of coaches and cuts into your valuable time. So most coaching is done over the telephone at a time agreed upon by both you and your coach.

I ask that you always come to your coaching session with a prepared agenda which you've sent to me beforehand. We use that to focus our calls. (Click here to see a blank Agenda form.)

The coaching sessions will feel very conversational, though you'll be doing most of the talking. Each session will generally follow these steps:

1. Check in and celebrate wins
2. Establish the focus for our session
3. Discover options and possibilities
4. Create an action plan
5. Identify and remove barriers
6. Review, commit to action, and set next meeting

This sounds more rigid and formal than it feels. As you and your coach work together, you build a relationship that allows you to explore and grow. It supports you in a very consistent, loving manner. We actually have a lot of fun together while we focus on what's important to you. You'll find yourself looking forward to your coaching session each week.
