~~ 1) Joy Juice ~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There have been women in the past far more daring than we would need to be now; who ventured all and gained a little, but survived after all. -- Germaine Greer
It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things. - Elinor Smith
~~ 2) Let's Ponder ~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The year after I graduated from high school in the early 70s, my high school began offering girls team sports. Each of my younger sisters played basketball and softball, and they each excelled in one or both sports. To this day, they are still involved in sports as parent coaches. Getting to play team sports positively impacted their lives in several ways. Had women's team sports been more readily available on the college level then, I believe they might have been enticed to college out of high school. Those opportunities have improved, and two of my nieces have gone to college on sports scholarships.

A few weeks ago, my youngest sister was invited to attend a reunion of her high school girls softball team which had won the state championship 20 years ago. The picture of those fabulous women just glowed with joy, pride, and strength.

Team sports for women are dramatically changing the lives of women and girls in this country and around the world. Yet each women's sport is still in its infancy, very fragile and vulnerable. We have to nurture these efforts, these teams, so they can become strong, consistent avenues for our daughters, nieces, and granddaughters.

In case you haven't realized where I'm going with this, the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) kicks off its 4th season tomorrow, May 29th, with a rematch of the 1999 championship game between the New York Liberty and the 3-time champion Houston Comets. You can catch the game at 3pm EDT on NBC.

Many of the women of the WNBA and the already defunct ABL league had to play for years outside this country. We didn't have a professional league for them, something that's still true for many other women's sports. The women's Olympic gold victory in the last Olympics finally drew our attention to these incredible women and helped bring them home to play. I think our upcoming Olympic women's teams will be equally exciting.

With the 4 new expansion teams, the WNBA has 16 teams suiting up this year. That's 16 opportunities for women coaches, assistant coaches, referees, players, and even women sports casters. It's really fantastic.

And more importantly, it's 16 teams with players to inspire us and serve as role models, to teach us, and to entertain us. The games are exciting. If you want to watch women doing what they love, and going all out for their dreams, tune in to any game. Let's support girls' and women's sports.

~~ 3) Taking Action ~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you want to learn more about the WNBA, when and where the games are, go to www.wnba.com. Be sure to write and let them know you're a fan.
And while you're at it, the games are being broadcast by ESPN, Lifetime, and NBC. Let those TV channels and stations know you're watching. Many of the games are being broadcast on local TV and radio stations, too, so tune in. And ask your local newspaper to provide coverage.
I hope you'll go to a WNBA game this season and take a daughter, niece, or granddaughter with you.
~~ 4) Soaring Free ~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it. -- Edith Wharton

I think our life is a combination of sometimes needing to be the candle and other times being satisfied to be a very good mirror.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~ 5) Play Time ~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

If you're like me and don't live close enough to get to a WNBA game easily, then choose a date when a game is being broadcast and invite your friends for a women's game night. Don't forget the popcorn!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~ 6) Joy Supplies ~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Think about a WNBA jersey as a gift for a girl's birthday this year. Every team has inspirational players and stories for girls to hear about and know. Add a WNBA team bumper sticker to your car. Promote your favorite women's sport!
