GullReasons for Hiring a Coach

(Do I have to have a problem or be in trouble to have a coach?)

People do sometimes look for a coach when they have a problem. For example, a graduate student may not know how best to prioritize her study time, or an employee might be experiencing a communication challenge at work. Another person may just want assistance balancing all areas of his life. Still others need help with household management and clutter control. These are good reasons to hire a coach.

Another situation that occurs often is that a person who has never run a business before wants to start his or her own business. They aren't in trouble nor do they have a problem, but they would certainly benefit from having a coach as they begin their new business. Other business people have a sense that something isn't right or working in their business, and they may look to a coach for assistance and perspective.

Similarly, think about a person who's just completed graduate school or a post doc. They have accepted a tenure-track assistant professorship. This is the culmination of years of work, and it's a new beginning which asks them to handle a great many responsibilities which they've never had to do before and for which they usually weren't trained. In many respects, these new professors have a small business to start -- they have to learn to handle budgeting and finance issues, prioritize their precious time and the many duties and tasks facing them, learn to train, manage, and lead people, serve on committees and teams, write proposals and research results, develop talks, and learn new skills such as how to teach, motivate people, and manage people's perceptions of them. This can be daunting to anyone! Do these successful people need a coach? No, they can rely on friends and new colleagues and learn all these skills themselves over time. The cost is time, wear and tear, and often burnout, lots of struggle, and too often not obtaining tenure. Working with a coach, the professor learns to handle the job quicker, keeps the focus clearly on the appropriate goals and actions that will move them to tenure success, and assists with balance and designing a rewarding life.

If you somehow have the idea that only people with serious problems use a coach, think again! Most people come to coaching because their life is pretty good already, and they are looking for opportunities to improve on that.

Here are some reasons why other people have used a coach:
